Bike Storage System-Final
-Define the Problem
The problem is that I am living in an apartament without a garage, and I need to find an area to put my bike where it wont be in the way.
-Brainstorm Solutions
1. I could use a box to put my bike in and store that vertical in a corner that I dont use that often, so no edges stick out and it easily moveable.
2. I could get hooks with screws on the end so that I could screw them into the wall and place my bike on it.
3. Lastly, I could get hooks with suction cups on the and of them with moveable ends so that I can put them wherever I want. Using these I could put it on the roof, the wall, outside on the building.
-Define Criteria and Constraints
People don't want to be inconvenienced when using one of my solutions.
Cannot leave perminate damage
-Generate Sketches
-Select an Approach: Use a Decision Matrix to justify your approach
-Model your solution with CAD software: Post an Isometric view of your assembly and a multiview drawing.
These hooks will come in packs of two for each package sold.

Locker Activity
This is the drawing of my locker.
This is a picture of my 4 multi-views.
This is a quick sketch of my locker.
These are the three different desings that I came up with before I came up with my perfect idea.
Write up:
-I need to design a locker for a school that is a fun locker to have and meets the requirements.
-I decided to make my locker a little bigger, since CHS lockers were really small, so that it would make students more happy and want to use their locker more.
-I had to be able to fit 20lb's in it, and i can easily, and is relatively easy to install for an individual, and there are no flammable materials in it.

The Deep Dive
1. “From the buildings in which we live and work, to the cars we drive, or the knives and forks with which we eat, everything we use was designed to create some sort of marriage between _________________ and _________________.” -Form/Function
2. The folks at IDEO state that they are not experts in any given area. But, they do claim to be experts on the ___________, which they apply to the innovation of consumer products.-Design Process.
3. After the team of designers is brought together, told the problem, and informed they have five days to “pull it off,” what phase of the design process do they immediately engage in?-They break into seperate groups to brainstorm and come up with ideas.
4. Give two examples of what the team members did during this phase.
a. A few took pictures of the current shopping carts to see what they could change.
b. Another group gained information gained ideas by asking questions to current shoppers and what they find to be right and wrong about the current shopping carts.
5. List five rules-of-thumb that IDEO employees follow when they share ideas during the brainstorming phase:
a. They encourage wild ideas.
b. They encourage the ideas of others.
c. They defer judgement.
d. One conversation at a time.
e. Have to stay focused on one topic.
6. Why should wild (and sometimes crazy) ideas be entertained during the brainstorming phase?
-Since they can later serve as contraints to an idea later on in the design process.
7. After the brainstorming phase was over, the team narrowed down the hundreds of ideas by _____________ for those ideas that were not only “cool” but also _________________ in a short period of time. What phase of the design process is this called?
-Implementing the use of sticky notes
-Buildable
-This part of the design phase is generating ideas.
8. IDEO believes that the ideas and efforts of a ______________ will always be more successful than the planning of a lone genius.
-Group
9. Once the ideas were narrowed down and divided into categories, the group was split into four smaller teams. What phase(s) of the design process was each of these groups responsible for?
-Each team had to construct a prototype and model it.
10. The leaders at IDEO believe that ________________ behavior and a ______________ environment are two important reasons why their employees are able to think quickly and creatively to produce innovative results.
-Playful/Fun
11. Sometimes, people come up with great solutions that work by trying their ideas first, and asking for _________________ later.
-Opinions
12. Design is often a process of going too far and having to take a few steps back. What phase of the design process would the critique of the four mock-ups come under?
-Refining and Communicating ones ideas
13. Upon critique of the four teams’ models, it was obvious that none of the teams had developed an optimum solution. However, the people at IDEO believe that it is important to _____________ often in order to _____________ sooner.
-Fail/Suceed
14. What percentage of the entire week’s time did it take to fabricate the final prototype?
-100%
15. Instead of showering his design team with a tremendous amount of praise, what did the boss require his employees to do with their new design?
-He improved their current design.
16. Of all the things that we are surrounded by every day, what has not been placed through the design process?
-How nature and factors affect things.
Conclusion
1. What did you find to be the most impressive part of the team’s effort?
-How they all work together and dont get mad at eachother often, and how they make it seem like fun but its a strenuous task.
2. What advantages are there to having a design team with members that have non-engineering backgrounds?
-Their ideas are more simplistic and not confined.
3. There was a point in the process where a self-appointed group of adults stepped up, stopped the ideas, and redirected the group to break up into teams. Why was this done?
-This was done to generally get the job done faster, instead of working on the project as a whole people worked on different little parts.
4. At the end of the video, Dave Kelly states, “Look around. The only things that are not designed are the things we find in nature.” Can you think of anything that would contradict this statement?
-The Grand Canyon.

GLIDER PROJECT
1) What's the challenge?
2) Brainstorm solutions:-What are the rules of brainstorming? (oxymoron)
3) Specify:-Criteria
4.)
Under view of our plane |
Top view of our plane |
- The challenge is to build a glider to be able glide as far as possible with limited paper and wood
2) Brainstorm solutions:-What are the rules of brainstorming? (oxymoron)
- the rules of brainstorming are to develope and write down your ideas on paper so you can see all your ideas
-List your ideas - we had a couple, one was two small wings in the front and back and a raised big wing in the middle - we did this one
- another idea we had was had 1 big bending wing from the front to back but when we tried it the wood broke
-Sketch at least two of them - we chose the first idea
3) Specify:-Criteria
- our criteria was to build a glideable glider with soft paper and bendy wood
-Constraints (be specific about materials available) - we had limited bulsa wood and limited soft paper to build a glider
What are your goals for your glider and how did you adjust your design in order to help it better meet them?
- our goal is to make it glide straight without it leaning back or diving straight into the ground. We adjust the lifting of the wings so it doesnt make it fly back and we added more weight to the back and middle.

Egg Drop Challenge - Iteration #1
- Our idea weighed less than 50 grams so we got an extra 6 achievements.
- Our first attempt hit the paper so we got 1 achievement.
- Our egg did not crack at all so there is 6 more.
- We used algebra to find the distance the egg falls, geometry using shapes and arithmetic to add the distance of the fall, we got 3 for this.
- Our last four achievements came from brainstorming and generating ideas.
-The other ideas that worked well were the simple ones. Mikes parachute held up well and it was just a piece of paper on top of something. Conners was also a parachute attacked to some mechanism. His mechanism had a cone inside so it made for better cushion.
Improvement?!
-A way that we could have improved our experiment was to add a helium baloon on top of the parachute so that it would have floated down slower and more accurately.

Ted-Superstring theory.
1) What is the TED organization about?
-The ted organization is about different philosophers coming together and explaining their ideas to the world.
2) What is the purpose of their website and how does the functionality of their site support that?
-The purpose of having their website the way that it is, is so that people can visit their website to gather information about their ideas. It is formatted the way that it is so that you can easily scroll around and pick a video of your choosing.
3) As Engineers and Problem Solvers, which topic areas (the choices from the "Show talks related to:" section on the sidebar) are of most interest to us? Justify your answer.
-I think the most interesting topics to us would most loikely be technology, design, and entertainment. I think these would be interesting to us in engineering because we are problem solvers, and these topics revolve around problems that we could possibly solve.
4) Based on your previous answer, what are 3 talks (videos) on the site that appear like they would be of most interest to you as an Engineer/Problem Solver? Justify your choices.
-Three other talk videos that seem interesting to me as an engineer would most likely be: The Birth of a word, because it is interesting to listen to this topic. Inside the Egyptian, because it is a sacred area that I would like to know more about. Another interesting thing to me as a problem solver, would be The rise of Personal Robots. This topic seems interesting because its something cool that could be implemented in the future.
5.) Bulletpost on the video.
-Talks about a new theory of gravity.
-Talks about Einsteins Theorys.
-Talks about a 4 dimension theory.
6) How could you get involved in the field/technology/issue you chose to hear about? What experience/skills/training/education would you need to learn to get involved with this field?
-This field definately revolves around theories and philosophical ideas. For me to get involved in this I would need to take science courses really serioulsy and take a physcology course. I would probably need to go to college for physcology and get a degree in sciences.

Mechanical Product
The product that I chose to do for this mechanical product was a Nintendo DS game system.
-This was the back view of this product.
-The elements that are included in this picture include: Horizontal and vertical lines, they are both parallel going along with one another.
-The pinciples in this picture include: Rythym, everything is going on a pattern and is in a balanced area to make

Something that this gameboy follows from the front view is horizontal lines. All of the lines going horizontal are parallel.
-Some principles include: Proportion, both of the flaps of this item are the same size, making it easier to follow and better.

Graphic Design: What's Going On In This Design?::Gillette Fusion
This item came from Wired magazine of July 2010, on page 8.
This item that is being marketed is Gillette fusion deodorant.
-Jake and I will explain to you about the effective graphic design-
Analysis: Message Content-(Drew/Jake)-The content in this add is solid. It tells us specifically what it is supposed to act as, which is an odor shield anti-perspirant, so one can move on with their life without worrying about their stench.
Size/Shape-(Drew/Jake)-The size and shape of the add seems to be perfect. It takes up a reasonable amount of the page and the text is short enough and precise enough that I won't get bored reading it.
Readability-(Drew/Jake)-The readability of this advertisement also seems great. The white text contrast the black background which makes it stick out and be easy to read.
Audience-(Drew/Jake)-This does appeal to the audience, which would be younger aged males to middle aged males. The color contrast one another and it looks like an interesting product. It seems unique and would make one want to buy this product.
Use of principles and elements-(Drew/Jake)-This add also also has good uses of the design elements and principles. It has a good use of color, space, and form/shape. It also has good balance of the page, it has emphasis on the product, and has symmetry.
Conclusion/Questions:
1. What are trends? Why is it important to identify them prior to graphic design?
Trends are fashions and things that people like to follow in life, it is what is popular at the moment. It is important to identify them because you want to appeal to your audience, you would put something out that the audience is currently using, not what they used 5 years ago.
2. How does human nature play a role in how a product is marketed to a specific demographic group?
Well, you want to place an add in something that fits it. A good idea would be to place deodorant in a men's magazine because men will use this deodorant. One would not place an add about bra's in a men's magazine because its inefficient and men would not use these.
3. How is an audience identified?
An audience is identified by their characteristics such as their age, income, job, and their fashion trends.
4. What must you discover about the target audience prior to graphic design?
You must discover what they are into, what they like, and what they are willing to buy and possibly how much money they have to spend on your product.
Challenger Explosion Post-Opt in #2
What technical problem caused this accident? Please describe with some detail.
-The main cause of the explosion was the failure of the aft joint seal in the right SRB due to the cold weather.
-A gas leak in the right SRB initiated at the wrong time and weakened the challenger. What was the big picture problem that set the conditions for this accident?
-The big problem that caused this accident to overall occur was that the people making the challenger did not have enough time to prepare it.-Due to not having enough time the challenger was not properly prepared and this was what led to it's explosion.
What implications did this have for the US Space Program? For the nation?
-This caused NASA to suspend space shuttle flight for atleast 2 years, and put the nation into a national tragedy. What other challenges have the Space Shuttles encountered?
Other space shuttles such as the Columbia have had problems.-7-8 minutes before the failure, gauges started to loose readings in Columbia's left wing, left landing gear brake system and tyre.
-Temperature and pressure gauges went off scale.
This was the challenger before the explosion.

Carnival Cruise
-There was a fire in the engine room and this made it unsafe to travel across seas.
-The crippled line splendor required heavy maintenance, this was a vital part of the ship.
-This unexpected arrival of this ship actually helped the economy in San Diego.
-Since repairs needed to be done on the ship it created a few jobs for people to do and more cash flow was created in San Diego.

Design Project
1.) The challenge presented to us was to design a desk organizer that is
made up of atleast 5 different parts. Then we would put the 5 different
parts into one part to make a final desk organizer. My partner is Freddy
Schlichtholz.
2.) I decided to choose this design brief because it interested me in what i could personally come up with as a desk organizer. It was fun putting this together in the CAD software system and i am glad that i chose this one to work on.
3.) Step one in the design process was easy. We knew the problem was making it the correct size and have variety so it could hold different supplies. Step 2 was a little more difficult. We decided to brainstorm on a simple device that would get the job done, and thats when we came up with our design. Step four in the process made our job difficult though. We had to make it atlesat 5 seperate pieces, and the pieces couldnt be that big. Thats why we decided to do boxes all the same size with different designs on each of them. Step 12 of the process was fun. I got the oppurtunity to communicate my results to my teacher and show him what i have put together. He said my project worked out and it wasnt a bad design, it was excactly what i wanted to hear because those words meant that my desk organizer passed.
This first image is a desk organizer that we came up with. It involves a ring with seperate organizers on the ring. You would be able to spin this around to acquire different things from each box.
This was another design that we implemented which included having 5 seperate desk drawers connected by bars in which u could ultimately open up any door and get whatever you needed.
THE MOST AMAZING PRODUCT EVER

Assignment
Some activites that I am involved in and that i also like doing, include, soccer, surfing, tennis, and skateboarding. My coach uses blogging in soccer to tell us what time our practices are and his opinions on how the team is doing. I might see myself blogging about tennis in the future maybe when i am in the buisness.

Tennis Ball Activity
All the team members in our group had to touch the tennis ball without each member in the group touching it twice, and also two members in the group could not be touching the ball at the same time. For the first challenege where everyone just had to touch the ball, our team came up with an idea that we would all put our hands in the middle, then our team captain Austen, would rub the ball on all of our hands. This idea worked very well and we won the first challenge. The second challenge was the same, everyone could touch it, but the two members could not be touching it at the same time. Our idea for this was to put the ball on the ground then individually we each touch the ball. This was actually a very good idea, but we lost this round, the other team did a funnel like idea, which I dont think followed the rules, but I guess they walked out of that one with the win. The third round, we had to all touch the ball, no one could touch it at the same time as another teammate, we were all armswidth spread apart, and we could not pass the ball to the person right next to us. We threw the ball too the person past the person next to us quickly, and this worked very well, we ended up winning this round. For the fourth and final round, everyone had to be on armswidth apart, and eyes closed and everyone had to touch the ball. Our groups idea for this was that Austen would be standing in the middle, and we would stick out arms out. He would put his arm at the same level as our arms. With all of our eyes closed, he spun around touching the ball to all of our hands. With sweet victory acquired, we walked away from this game winning 3 out of the 4 rounds played.
At Sea Activity
At Sea Activity!
Intro: A brief summary of the activity.
-The thing that we did in this activity was we gathered a list of materials. We were told to organize these materials in a list that we found most important. We also had a group to talk to about what we found to be best and worst.
Personal Prioritization: List your prioritization of the items. Share your reasoning on your top 2 picks and your bottom choice. Were there any items you had a hard time choosing a ranking for?
-My top pick was the shaving mirror, because it could serve as a reflection device for savior. My second choice was water, because you need it to survive and is useful for staying hydrated.
Team Prioritization: What priority did your team agree on? Talk about an item the group ranked similarly to you. What was something the group ranked far differently than you? What was something you and the group ranked similarly? How did your group work together?
-Both me and my group agreed that the water and the shaving miror would b ranked as numbers 1 and 2. But something that was ranked considerably differently for me was the chocolate, they said that if they were dying they wanted some chocolate to chow on.
-We both ranked the fishing kit at about number 5, since it wasnt that important, but its not like it was a waste of time.
-Overall, me and my group worked well together, we came to a team concensus that we could all agree on.
Expert Prioritization: How did your choices compare to the "official" Coastguard choices? Were there any big surprises between the two? What do you put more weight in, expert opinion or experiential data? Why?-Our team was really far off from the expert choices. The experts were more concerned about getting us rescued, so they put the oil up at the start of the list.
-I would actually probably put for weight in the experiemental data instead of the coast guards data, considering they are only concerned about how easy it is for them to rescue someone.
